If you find yourself in Toronto, do not miss the chance to see Niagara Falls with your own eyes. It is unlikely that you will ever find yourself in just a couple of hours drive from this miracle of nature, because Toronto is the largest city closest to Niagara from not only Canada, but also the United States.

Curious fact: in fact, Niagara Falls does not exist. In fact, this is a complex of three waterfalls on the Niagara River, the largest and most recognizable of which - the “Horseshoe Falls” - is located just on the Canadian side. Its length is 792 meters, and the height of the water flows is 53 meters. The size of the American Falls is also impressive - 323 meters wide and the same 53 meters high, however, due to the rocky foot, its visible height is only 23 meters. The third and smallest Bridal Veil Falls is 17 meters wide.

You can get to the city of Niagara Falls by bus or train directly from the center of Toronto, travel time - 2-2.5 hours.

How to see Niagara Falls if you come from Toronto

Inspecting Niagara Falls from Canada is much more fun than from the United States. It is from the Canadian coast that a panoramic view opens not only of Podkova, but also of the other two Niagara Falls. In addition to the free viewing platform, there are several other ways to enjoy the epic spectacle:

  • go down into the tunnels to see and hear the waterfall from the inside (Journey Behind the Falls tour, $ 17.30)
  • get closer to the foot of the Horseshoe on the ship (Hornblower Niagara Cruise, $ 25.95)
  • climb to the observation deck of the 160-meter Skylon Tower (Skylon Tower Observation Deck, $ 15.02)
  • fly over a waterfall in a helicopter (Niagara Helicopter Tour, $ 144)
  • ride past an American bungee waterfall (MistRider Zipline, $ 49.99)

You can also go 5 kilometers downstream of the Niagara to ride over the Niagara Whirlpool by cable car (Whirlpool Aero Car, $ 14.55) or rafting on the rapids of a river by boat (Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours, $ 63).

If you have an American visa, then you can cross over to the opposite bank by the Rainbow Bridge, which offers excellent views of all three waterfalls.

The waterfall is open year round. Summer is the best time to visit Niagara. In winter, when the temperature drops below zero, the coast and viewing platforms are covered with ice, and outdoor excursions are pretty cool.

But in the winter in Canada near the waterfall a festival of lights is held. Against the dark sky, fireworks explode and are reflected in the streams of water and the ice belt of the waterfall.

How to visit Niagara Falls?

A few years ago I had a chance to visit Toronto and, of course, I could not miss the opportunity to look at one of the wonders of the world - Niagara Falls. From Toronto to the town of Niagara Falls only 130 km - and after two hours by bus you can already see this unique miracle of nature.

The waterfall is located on the border of the United States and Canada near the five largest freshwater lakes in the world: Upper, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario. The only water drain of the first four of them is the Niagara River, flowing from Lake Erie and flowing into Lake Ontario.

Niagara Falls is, in fact, the most famous Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. Although the vertical drop is not great - 53 m, the waterfalls are very wide. American Falls - 323 meters, Horseshoe Falls - 792 meters.

A few hundred meters downstream from Niagara Falls between the United States and Canada, the Rainbow Bridge is open, allowing cars and pedestrians to travel between the two countries.

The beauty of this miracle of nature attracts 15 million tourists from around the world every year, which contributes to the prosperity of the two towns of Niagara Falls, one on the American shore of the waterfall, the other on the Canadian.

It is from the Canadian coast that the most colorful view of Niagara Falls opens, so in the Canadian Niagara Falls and its environs there is everything to relax and get acquainted with this amazing natural phenomenon.

Comfortable hotels, picturesque parks, all kinds of restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as a huge selection of entertainment for all ages and for every taste. There are historical monuments, museums, various festivals are held and colorful fireworks unique in beauty are arranged.

Here Table Rock is located - the most famous observation deck from which tourists can watch the waters of Niagara Falls, overturning down.

You can look at one of the wonders of the world not only from this platform, but also directly approaching Niagara Falls. To do this, use the boats called Maid of Mist (Virgin of the Fog), which depart every 30 minutes from both the Canadian and the American coast. These are two boats Maids VI and Maids VII 24 meters long and designed for 600 passengers. Boats are equipped with 350 hp engines. and able to withstand a powerful current. Passengers are given souvenir cloaks that protect them from fog and spray waterfalls.

Here is the price of tickets for this excursion: ticket prices from the Canadian coast - adults $ 14.50, children $ 13.50, ticket prices from the American coast - adults $ 8.90, children $ 7.85.

Unfortunately, for everything about everything, I had only 4 hours of time, because in the evening I had to fly away from Toronto to Calgary, and I just did not have time to see much in the vicinity of Niagara Falls itself. And there is something to see here.

The Niagara Botanical Garden, founded in 1936 and located 9 kilometers north of the waterfall, covers an area of 100 acres. Here is the world's largest floral watch, which consists of 19 thousand flowers, and twice a year the “dial” is updated by replanting flowers.

In the Niagara Butterfly Conservatory, wet rainforest conditions are modeled. Amazing plants from all over the world grow here, and more than 2000 species of exotic butterflies live.

Niagara Glen is a natural park: you can go down into the canyon along a long staircase and get into a completely different world. In this world of stones, granite and limestone, from which the bottom of the tropical sea once consisted, one can see the imprints of ancient creatures that once lived on the planet, and study the biology and geology of the Earth. It is said that tourists here often get the feeling that they are lost and will never find the way back to the only staircase leading upstairs.

I was at Niagara Falls in the month of June, but it is beautiful in the winter: at this time of year only the river’s edges freeze, huge, simply gigantic stalactites, icicles sparkling against the background of water gradually grow from the rocks protruding on the crest of the waterfall. Rainbow bridge (Rainbow bridge), connecting the Canadian and American shores, is covered with a layer of ice and turns into a fabulous ice structure.

In the winter season, the “Winter Festival of Lights” is held in Canadian Niagara: hundreds of illuminated panels appear in the city and colorful fireworks are arranged. How to get to Niagara Falls and what it will result in money

It depends on which side you want to watch it from, Canadian or American. In the first case, the best flight will be to Toronto, and in the second to New York.

The cost of a direct flight from Moscow to Toronto is about $ 1,500. You can try to fly through Kiev. A Kiev – Toronto ticket costs about $ 1,200. But then again, there are plenty of ways to buy cheaper tickets - earlier bookings, tracking stocks of air carriers, etc. You just have to sit on the Internet in advance and choose the most economical flight.

From Toronto to Niagara Falls 130 km. Coach Canada buses depart every one and a half to two hours from the Toronto Coach Terminal central bus station. The ride time is about two hours. Ticket price - 15 dollars. You can buy tickets and see the schedule on the Company's website.

A local bus runs from Niagara Falls Bus Station to Niagara Falls. Rides for about 20 minutes, and if my memory serves me right, the ticket price is about 5 dollars. But be careful and find out in advance when he returns to Niagara Falls. Otherwise, there is a chance to be late for the return bus to Toronto.

Of course, you can use a taxi, but the price will be much higher.

How and for what price you can fly to New York, I do not indicate here. And to see Niagara from the American coast, you must first get to the city of Buffalo.

The cheapest flight from New York to Buffalo is with the American low-cost airline JetBlue. The ticket costs $ 220 round trip. You can book and buy tickets in advance on the company's website.

From Buffalo Airport to American

Niagara Falls runs route bus number 210. The distance is small and the ticket price is only $ 2.

In Canada Niagara Falls there are quite a few hotels of various categories. Using the hotel booking portal on the Internet, it is quite possible to get a hotel at $ 60-80 per night. Or you can stay at the Mariot Hotel (from $ 200 per night) and enjoy the highlight of Niagara Falls from the top floor in the evening.

Of course, flying to North America just to spend a couple of days at Niagara Falls is somewhat unprofitable. But if you decide to go see the United States, be sure to include Niagara Falls on the list of what you would like to see.

Where is Niagara Falls, how to get, where to stop, how to see, what to do at Niagara Falls, how much it costs to visit and what time it takes to visit. As well as the myths of Niagara Falls and many photographs.

Niagara Falls does not bear any official title of “self-most,” but still it is the most famous in the world. Not everyone imagines what he looks like; not everyone is interested in where he is. But since childhood, everyone knows about a wonderful place where crystal clear water endlessly falls from an unprecedented height and impresses with the beauty of everyone around.

Is it so? Fill in the gaps in knowledge or repeat:

About Niagara Falls: description, height and myths.

In fact, these are three waterfalls: “Horseshoe” (51 m high), “Bride's Veil” and “American Waterfall” (21 meters high, because stones are piled at the foot). The last two are in America, and the first is Canada, so its second name is “Canadian Falls”.

An American waterfall, as you can see, stones are piled at its foot, this reduces erosion.

We won’t go into the history of formation in detail, but we need to clarify that this happened at the end of the ice age, the glacier began to melt and drag somewhere, crushing stones under itself, soil and changing the surface of the earth.

The stormy Niagara River at the very Niagara Falls.

To this day, the waterfall is changing, before it climbed up the Niagara River up to 3 meters per year, this is an undesirable phenomenon. America and Canada agreed to take all possible measures to stop erosion and "push" the waterfall to the south. In 1969, everyone freaked out, completely drained the “Bridal Veil” and “American Falls” and built structures to strengthen the region. Then the water was released back and, thanks to this, the waterfall moves back only 30 cm per year. I could not imagine that such a colossus could possibly be drained and done with it whatever you want. It’s like it’s just a faucet with water in the bathroom.

It is difficult to imagine the strength of the Niagara Falls stream.

They did not dare to dry the Horseshoe Falls, apparently they were afraid of the thunder God Hinum and his sons living in a cave under the thickness of falling water. There is an ancient legend.

A long time ago, on the banks of Niagara Falls lived a peaceful tribe of Indians Ongiaras. For no reason, people began to disappear in the tribe. It was decided that God was angry. The Indians began sending canoes full of fruits and vegetables to the waterfall. Such a "fruit offering" of God did not satisfy. Then they began to select the most beautiful girl once a year and send her to God.

In one of the years, they chose the beautiful Lelavala, the daughter of the leader, Sharp eye. The girl decided to find out why the Indians annihilate the girls every year. Dressed in a white bathrobe and a wreath of flowers, she sat in a canoe, and the water carried her to a cliff. The sons of God saw such beauty and decided to save her. They picked up a canoe. The girl was not taken aback and said that she would stay with someone who would tell her the truth about the deaths in her village. The youngest son turned out to be quicker and split, that at the bottom of the waterfall there is a huge snake and once a year she wants to eat, crawls into the village at night and poisons the water, and then eats the dead.

Lelavae passed the word for word to the Indians and ordered the next year to kill the snake, which they did when she was hungry again. And the girl kept her promise and began to live in the cave of the god Hinum. Since then, she has been nicknamed Maid of the Mist.

Do not repeat for Lelavae. Dozens of Europeans, Americans and Canadians tried to do like her, some in barrels, others without uniforms and only a few managed to survive and stay in their right mind. True, they had to pay a tidy fine for breaking the law. You can not climb into the waterfall. Even in winter, when will it freeze? It is not known that the waterfall froze only twice in 1848 and 1912. Fierce winters stood out in those years.

Enough stories, move on to useful information.

How much does it cost to visit Niagara Falls?

Entrance to the territory of the waterfall is free, there are several sites from which a beautiful view opens. There are paid entertainment, I will describe them in more detail below.

Several viewing platforms. I see 4.

What to do at Niagara Falls and how much does it cost?

On the American side, there are several paid entertainment and viewing platforms for the waterfall.

Observation Observatory - Niagara Falls Observation Tower.

They brag about the view from her as from the Canadian side. I don’t know how on the other side, but the view is really bewitching and beautiful. From here you can clearly see waterfalls, boats, Canada and the Rainbow Bridge.

Niagara Falls Observation tower is a green tower with an observation deck. The observation deck is roomy and the view is superb.

A ticket costs $ 17 and includes the main attraction of the waterfall - a boat excursion to the foot of the Maid of the Mist waterfall (remember where the name comes from?).

Boat excursion to the foot of the waterfall - Maid of the Mist.

Boats also run on the Canadian side. The differences between the boats of the two countries are the color of raincoats in public. Canadians are red, and Americans are blue. They are given free to everyone before boarding the boat.

Canadian boat went to the foot of the waterfalls.

Tickets cost $ 17 and include an observation observatory (Niagara Falls Observation Tower).

Departure daily from 9.00 a.m. to 18 p.m. (17.18, depending on the season), it is better to check the time on the official website. The first day of the year is May 1, the last is November 8.

The tour lasts about 15-25 minutes. Everyone takes seats at the sides on a two-story boat, she leaves and drives up first to the American Falls, then floats to the "Veil of the Bride".

Then the most interesting part begins, for the sake of which raincoats were given out.The boat floats in the center of the Horseshoe Falls and goes around its circumference. At this time, people are flooded with a lot of spray, more like a good-quality cool shower, everyone squeals, screams, runs around the deck trying to stay at least a little dry, fidgeting in raincoats, trying to seal all the gaps, but this does not help. Water is poured everywhere in the eyes, mouth, nose, ears, pants, shoes and sleeves.

On a note! If possible, buy cellophane jumpsuits and swimming goggles. Do not remove the camera from the bag; if the bag is permeable, then pack it well in cellophanes. Take flip flops or any other shoes with you to change your shoes after visiting the excursions.
Just imagine that you are walking under a cold shower with all things.

An observation deck at the foot of the American Falls.

You can also get here by ticket for $ 17. This is done before or after the boat excursion, already in the raincoat. This shows how the water column falls from a height of 21 meters and breaks into stones. There is a special platform where everyone takes pictures.

Lookout at the American Falls, is there anyone else who wants to get wet?

Entertainment "Cave of the Winds" (Cave of the Winds).

No less extreme than a boat.

The cost is $ 14. Raincoats are given to visitors and they descend to the foot of the “Bridal Veil” waterfall, where they are well watered with water and blowing with a strong wind, all wet to the skin, but the happy ones go upstairs.

Cave of the Winds, Cave of The Winds. The daredevils approach the waterfall itself and are doused by a decent stream of water.

In addition, the park has:

  • Niagara Adventure Theater
  • Aquarium of niagara
  • Niagara Gorge Discovery Center

If you plan to visit all these places, then it is better to buy a single ticket for $ 38 per adult and $ 31 for children. Read more on the official website of Niagara Falls.
