Hello dear readers. Now many are switching to natural cosmetics and various body care oils. We are not an exception. We bought on different sites. But in order to buy good oil, you need to have $ 30-50 for a small bottle or bottle, an already low-quality product will be cheaper. And grabbing it is not so much. We wanted to make lavender oil at home, by ourselves. I looked through many sites, almost all of them just copied from each other, and no one cooks himself. And what I found, I did not like. Went to the English-speaking world, and found completely different recipes. More precisely, the recipes are the same, but the ingredients are different. Prepared according to the recipe, slightly adapting it for yourself.
And when I talked with friends from the Crimea, I told them that the lavender brought from them went into action. They asked where, and told their recipe for lavender oil.
I will begin my story with a recipe that can be done faster. But not by the time spent, but by the yield of the finished lavender oil. Although he did it first according to the second recipe.
For both recipes, we will use the same ingredients, only the proportions and processing method will differ. Namely, we will need lavender and vegetable oil.
I take lavender in the form of dry flowers. We brought her from the Crimea. There, lavender is sold on almost every corner, and it is not expensive. Especially if you know where to buy.
I take sunflower oil, cold pressed. It is odorless, and I take it at a proven point, people who work professionally in oil have their own press. Of course, you can take refined, but I doubt its quality. Recently, even in a frying pan on such oil, it begins to burn.
How to make lavender oil at home
For the first recipe, we need to pour dry flowers and stems into a jar in which the oil will be infused. We take a 0.5 liter can. Since we have a lot of lavender, we will often use lavender oil.
Fill the flowers with vegetable oil so that they are completely covered, and another one centimeter on top. When swelling, the flowers will increase slightly.
Cover and send for one two days in the sun. Then we transfer to a dark and dry place for 40 - 60 days. We put in the pantry.
They just put a bag between the lid and the jar so that the oil does not absorb any odors.
More than two months have passed. I put it on October 11, and strained 3.01.2017. It was just not necessary to rush, there was already oil in stock. About the quick cooking method a little lower.
We will filter through gauze. I took the cheesecloth in two layers, covered it with a plate and poured the contents of the can. It is advisable to slightly warm the oil, then it will drain faster.
We heat the jar a little, but not more than 50 degrees. This can be done in a water bath, or on a battery.
When our oil is glass, then we also squeeze our lavender in gauze.
After that, we need to strain it one more time. To do this, I take a piece of cotton and do not tightly close the opening of the watering can with it. The photo below on the right shows how I did it.
This is necessary in order to remove pollen from the flowers of lavender, which got into the oil. Here on this plate you can clearly see this pollen. At first I defended the oil a little, and then gently drained it through a funnel into a dark bowl.
I will say right away that this is not fast. For example, I got almost 250 grams of finished lavender oil, and it drained through the fleece for more than 30 minutes.
I specifically made a thick layer of cotton so that the pollen would not leak out. In the photo, not all the oil, this is a 200 gram bottle, the rest I poured into another vessel made of dark glass.
Store oil in the refrigerator. To keep the oil longer, you can add a few drops of vitamin E.
Raw materials for the preparation of essential oils
The healing properties of one and the same plant may vary depending on the time of day and the season of collection of raw materials. And also from the method of extracting essential oil and from the conditions and duration of storage
Do-it-yourself essential oil can be made from plants grown on a personal plot or from wild plants.
Flowers are collected at the time of their full disclosure (calendula, rose, chamomile). Leaves and stems - before flowering plants (basil, rosemary). If the whole aerial part of the plant is used, then the collection is also carried out during the flowering period (lavender, St. John's wort, yarrow).
Fruits and seeds are harvested fully ripened (coriander, milk thistle). During this period, the content of healing components in the plant (flavonoids, aldehydes, phytoncides) is maximum. This improves the healing properties of oils.
The roots and other underground parts of plants are dug up in the fall (burdock root). At this time, the vegetation period has ended and the roots are saturated with useful components.
When to collect raw materials
It is also important and time of collection of plants. It is better to collect plants in the morning, when there is already no dew, and in sunny weather. Remember that plants cannot be collected at roadsides, near industrial enterprises. They absorb all dust, dirt and various industrial waste. The best places to collect plants are forests, mountains, meadows, not plowed fields.
How to dry
In the preparation of essential oil, dried raw materials are also used. Plants need to be dried, as well as medicinal herbs, in ventilated sheds or other rooms, on bedding made of paper, fabric, on shelves or boards. Another prerequisite is the absence of sunlight. Under the influence of the sun, essential oils evaporate and the beneficial components contained in the plant break down. They are also dried in ovens or electric dryers at a temperature of 30-40 ° C. As a result of drying, plants lose more than half their weight in weight.
Compliance with all conditions for the collection and preparation of raw materials guarantees the production of high-quality natural oil.
