A computer mouse is one of the main means of controlling and entering information on a PC using the cursor on the monitor screen, buttons and the wheel on the body of this manipulator. Earlier we talked about how to choose the right device. Now let's figure out how to configure the mouse in Windows for yourself for more comfortable work on the computer.
In all versions of Windows, mouse settings are made through the control panel. The differences are only in the way the panel is opened in versions 7 and 10 using the menu.
Tip. You can get to the control panel in all versions of the operating system through the command line "Run"Caused by a combination of hot keys Win+R. Type the word “control” in the input field and press the “Enter"Or click LMB on the OK button.
In the window that opens, select the "Mouse buttons" tab.
Here you can configure variations with a change of purpose
left and right mouse buttons (the so-called left-handed).
Double click execution speed
A little lower in the window is a scroller, the translation of which left-right adjusts how much
A quick response will be after double-clicking the left mouse button.
Mouse button sticking
A fairly useful feature, although it has a purely domestic aspect. If sticking is active, now
There will be no need to pinch mouse buttons while dragging folders and files. Enough for a few
seconds, hold down the button and the selected file (folder) itself will “stick” to the cursor. Well, to complete
the procedure for dragging and dropping an object, just make one click with the mouse in the place where the file
Setting pointer options
The tab "Index Options" is responsible for several important options that will simplify not only
work on a PC, but also improve the gameplay in different computer games.
We see a slider whose movement adjusts the speed of the mouse pointer on the screen.
Moving it to the left decreases the speed, and to the right, accordingly, increases it. By the way, the bigger
Screen resolution is used on a PC or laptop, the more smooth and slow movements seem
the cursor. It is a little annoying and pressing on the eyes.
To speed up the cursor movement, you can uncheck the option “Enable high
cursor accuracy. " Perhaps this is the most profitable solution for large monitors. But, in his own way
I’ll say to experience that almost no one bothers with setting this parameter, being content with basic
The initial position of the cursor in the window
Not a critical function, but, nevertheless, it can be useful to save time. When activated, so
called “default buttons”, when we open a dialog box, the mouse cursor will always be
to be on it.
A purely visual function that adjusts the following cursor parameters:
• Track pointer. When the cursor moves, it multiplies by several copies.
• Hiding the pointer. When typing from the keyboard, the cursor disappears so as not to distract your vision
• Cursor search. If suddenly the mouse cursor is not visible on the screen (especially relevant on white
background), just click Ctrl and a circle will immediately appear, indicating exactly where
This tab adjusts the visual parameters of the pointer.
Just select a scheme from the drop-down list, and enjoy various visual and animated
In addition, each effect can be adjusted individually. Although uninformed
it’s better for users not to get into the fine settings, because then it will be difficult to restore
You can also customize the mouse wheel. To do this, go to the Wheel tab there are not as many settings as in the previous ones, but still.
Everything is very simple here, you can adjust the scroll speed.
In horizontal scrolling, everything is the same.
In conclusion, I can say that only a few mouse settings are useful to ordinary people
the rest are sharpened for certain activities on the PC. However, knowledge is not superfluous
never, and I hope my information was at least a little useful to you.
How to change mouse settings
Game instances with many additional buttons are configured through special programs, while to configure a typical manipulator, the OS features are enough. Setting up a mouse in Windows 7 is simple:
- Open the "Control Panel" (via the Start menu, from a shortcut, or in another convenient way).
- We go to the “Hardware and Sound” subsection, where we select “Mouse” (you can also use the search bar on the Control Panel).
- In the new window, consisting of five tabs, all the basic settings of the manipulator are performed.
The first tab is responsible for configuring the buttons. Here it is possible to change their functions with each other, which is very handy if the user's leading hand is left. To do this, the item "Exchange button assignment" must be checked. Here you can also change the speed of double-clicking, as well as enable sticky keys, which will allow you to drag and select objects without holding them with the mouse. After the necessary parameters are configured, click the “Apply” button for the changes to take effect, then “OK”, after which the window will close.
The remaining tabs offer customization of other functions. For example, if you go to the "Pointers", there is the opportunity to modify the mouse pointer, and the "Pointer Settings" allows you to set the speed of movement and configure other additional options. The “Wheel” tab is responsible for scrolling settings, the “Equipment” contains information about connected devices (by clicking on the “Properties” button, the next window opens where you can not only view information, but also update the driver, etc. - the same actions are available from Device Manager).
Despite the differences in the functionality of the OS of different versions, the mouse setting in Windows 10 is practically the same. Mouse properties are available from the Control Panel (set the "Small Icons" in the viewing options and the search for the required item will be much easier). Selecting “Mouse” from the list, you will see a window with the same tabs that allow you to configure the device, as in previous versions of the OS.
Mouse sensitivity setting
Many do not even think about making adjustments to the operation of the device, and indeed, for everyday tasks, the existing standard settings are enough. But gamers or users whose professional activities require high accuracy, take both buying the “right” mouse and adjusting the sensitivity of the device very seriously. At the same time, the setting is also required if you do not hit the objects with the cursor or other inconveniences are noticed when the pointer moves. Depending on the working environment, it is necessary to change the sensitivity, adapting it to the tasks to be performed. This property of the device is provided by the sensor resolution (CPI or DPI - we will analyze how to configure this mouse parameter in Windows), the USB port polling frequency and response time. If we cannot change the characteristics that the mouse is endowed with from the manufacturer, then in the settings we can still slightly overclock even an ordinary mouse. Consider how to adjust the sensitivity of the mouse by making small changes to the settings. You can change the setting on Windows 7 as follows:
- We follow the path “Control Panel” - “Equipment and Sound” - “Mouse”.
- Go to the "Pointer Settings" tab.
- In the "Moving" section, move the slider to the left (reduce speed) or right (increase), so the cursor moves.
- If you check the option “Enable increased accuracy of pointer installation”, the cursor will pause near the buttons - so you’ll be better off hitting them.
- Click "Apply", then "OK."
The second method, which allows you to configure the DPI of the mouse on the Seven as precisely as possible, involves using the Run console:
- In the search bar of the Start menu, enter the query “cmd”.
- To determine the sensitivity, we write the REG QUERY command “HKCU Control Panel Mouse” / v MouseSensitivity.
- To set the desired indicator on the command line, we write "REG ADD" HKCU Control Panel Mouse "/ v MouseSensitivity / t REG_SZ / d" here we set the desired value "/ f".
- The numerical value can be set from 1 to 20, you can also use decimal fractions (for example, 11.5, etc.).
To set the mouse cursor speed on Windows 10, do the following:
- Go to the "Control Panel", where we select "Mouse".
- In the "Pointer Options" move the slider to the desired position.
To adjust the sensitivity of the manipulator, special software is also used that allows you to configure the device in detail "for yourself". Many modern mice come with drivers that provide more customization options. For example, to increase the sensitivity, the port polling frequency is configured (in the mouse driver settings). If the drive did not go to the device, you can download software for a specific model on the official website.
Double click setup
In various situations, for example, when the user is inexperienced or limited physical capabilities, it can be difficult to cope with the manipulator buttons. Among the parameters of the device, it is also possible to change the speed of double-clicking. So, to configure the mouse as you feel more comfortable, open the properties window ("Mouse" from the "Control Panel"). Here, in the “Mouse buttons” tab, by dragging the slider, we decrease (or increase, if that’s the goal) the double-click execution speed. To check, there is a shortcut in the form of a folder in the block simulating its opening when you double-click the left button. Adjust the speed and accept the changes.
How to adjust the wheel and scroll speed
If the mouse used on a laptop or PC has a wheel, which is not uncommon for modern devices, then you have the opportunity to configure this control too. You can do this all in the same window of the mouse properties in the "Wheel" tab. Here you will see two blocks:
- Vertical scrolling. We adjust the wheel rotation to the specified number of lines (set the desired value) or to one screen.
- Horizontal scrolling allows you to configure scrolling to the selected number of characters horizontally (if the mouse supports the function).
You can also increase the scroll speed in Windows 10 as follows:
- Through the "Start" we go to the "Settings".
- Select "Devices" - "Mouse".
- Here you can set the scroll when reading several lines at a time, choosing a value using the slider, or one screen. In addition, it is possible to enable the scroll option for inactive windows when you hover over them (by moving the toggle switch to the active position).
How to change the mouse pointer
If you don’t accept the standards or the cursor is tired, you can change it in the "Pointers" tab of the mouse properties window in Windows 10 or other versions. It is possible to set other index images in the “Scheme” block, the cursors available for this scheme will be visible below in the settings field (by clicking on each one you can only change its appearance in this scheme, choosing the image of your choice). The actions are canceled by the “Default” button, the “Browse” button opens the directory with the available cursors, and if you want to turn on the shadow of the pointer, you need to check the corresponding item. To correctly configure the mouse cursor, after making the necessary changes, click the "Apply" button, and then "OK."
Additional mouse buttons
If you have an advanced instance of the manipulator, which includes additional buttons in addition to the main ones, you can also configure them using special software. Programs designed for this purpose already include game and program macros, which will save you from unnecessary configuration steps. In the settings of some mice, multi-profile is also supported, that is, a change in the options for the set button values, which provides the ability to assign a large number of tasks to the device. Basically, additional mouse buttons are used in game battles and allow you to replace the use of all kinds of keyboard shortcuts. Some mouse modifications are able to execute commands when working with the office or on the network, as well as turn off, restart the computer, call the quick launch menu, etc. Drivers for a specific model can be found on the official website and configure the mouse in the most convenient way for quickly performing various actions. In the absence of drivers, universal applications are also suitable.
Different programs are used to configure additional mouse keys, and although their interface is different, they all work on the same principle, with the ability to configure “extra” buttons for quickly performing various actions. The side buttons, like the standard ones, are already assigned by default; certain options are assumed for them, but you can also configure them at your discretion for the tasks that are performed. An image of your mouse will be available in the program window, where the available keys and command settings for them are visually indicated. We assign buttons using filters, create, edit or apply ready-made macros.
In addition to the basic parameters, when the mouse is configured, you can also begin to familiarize yourself with the available functions in more detail. An option is available in the properties window on the “Index Settings” tab that allows you to automatically position the cursor on the default button when a dialog box is open (for example, “OK”, “Save”, etc.). In the “Visibility” block, you can make settings for displaying the cursor, such as displaying the pointer’s track when moving, including its length (adjusted by dragging the slider), hiding it when entering from the keyboard, or marking the location when pressing the Ctrl key (the function allows you to quickly find hidden cursor on the screen).
Since the functionality of the system does not support the configuration of multifunctional mice, in the case of the game option it is better to immediately use a special application. In addition to assigning keys, you can also adjust or disable the backlight of the device using drivers. The program for setting the mouse backlight will allow you to perform the necessary actions through special buttons. Despite the simplicity of the device and the lack of the need to make changes for non-specific work, even the most ordinary computer mouse is capable of much. Some features lie on the surface, but sometimes, in order to maximize the potential of the mouse, you have to dig a little into the settings.
