Macro photography and subject photography require good lighting. However, it’s quite difficult to properly illuminate an object to show its natural color, details and beauty. Lightcube is a great solution. It provides light scattering and creates a uniform background on which to place the object. Although a light cube can be expensive, this article will tell you how to make a lightcube for only 60 rubles (or even free if you already have the necessary materials).
Put the box on its side. The hole should be directed towards you.
There are many articles on the net about how to make your lightcube out of a cardboard box. And I had such a cube.
At first, I liked everything about him, but the minuses gradually began to appear: the speed of production negatively affects the life expectancy, the size of the light box is periodically lacking (my last “cube” was 35 * 35 * 40 cm), the cardboard skeleton is easily damaged when replacing the “diffusers” ”And the subject table (they break and get dirty with time).
Therefore, I decided to replace the skeleton of the “cube” with a stronger one, and make it of the dimensions I need, and not start from what size I have cardboard boxes.
The idea to make a skeleton from a wire box came spontaneously while visiting a hardware store - for my “cube” I took 3 sticks 2 meters long.
To create a lightbox you will need
• Box for wires
• Corrugated paper
• Double-sided tape
• Small carnations
20p, Corrugated paper
In the photo at the beginning of the last section you can see 2 lamps and 2 lamps. Before that I had a table lamp and a clothespin, but they had different socles. I decided to buy the second one of the same “clothespin” and take two energy-saving lamps - 23W (corresponding to 160W for an incandescent lamp), 4200K (bright white light). Such 2 lamps and 2 lamps will cost 800-900r.
I’ll make a reservation right away - I do not pretend to be optimally designed, because how to connect the faces of the “cube” to each other I decided on the go. But what I got in the end, I liked it, and I decided to talk about it.
The boxes were cut as follows: 4 pieces of 50cm and 8 pieces of 35cm (it was these lightbox sizes that seemed optimal for use / storage):
In order to connect the “sticks” to each other, I used the feature of the boxes - a hollow design:
And the connection points were fixed with small carnations:
First made the sides:
And then he again used the hollow design of the boxes for the construction of the base:
After some time, the skeleton was ready:
When I fastened all the sticks together and got a box, I decided to add two extensions to the back wall to increase strength and stability. He made stretch marks from the remaining parts. He also added one “rail” to the bottom, so that the future bottom of the cardboard does not sag down.
After he attached the bottom and pasted the paper (to make a “subject table”):
At the end, I glued corrugated paper on the sides and on top of the lightbox:
That's it, lightbox is ready. With its large size, the lightbox turned out to be durable - it does not stagger or bend. For the sake of the experiment, “accidentally” dropped the structure off the table a couple of times - the skeleton remained intact, even the paper on the sides did not have to be changed. And since the lightbox with such dimensions turned out to be quite durable, if it were smaller, say 20x20x20cm, then it would be even stronger. And such a photobox is easy to make the sizes you want.
Lightbox working condition:
The purchased bulbs noticeably “crawl out” of the lamp housing, so I made a “continuation” of the paper housing to better focus the light on the lightbox, and also to prevent direct rays from getting into my eyes.
Examples of received photos
For a couple of years now, my camera has been the Nikon Coolpix L110 (budget hyperzoom). All pictures were taken using it.
It turned out an inexpensive, but durable lightbox, the price of which is only 300 rubles. I hope this article comes in handy for someone.
If you need a lightbox quickly, then use this method. To get started, prepare everything you need:
- a plastic container with transparent walls (they should not have patterns, protrusions and other details),
- a large sheet of paper or roll,
- white not very dense fabric
- universal glue,
- three small bulbs with clamps.
- Everything is extremely simple. Take the container and fill it with cloth or paper. If the subject is small, and you will take it from one angle in front, then there is enough paper that you just need to cover the bottom and one of the wide sides (or two sides for softer and more diffuse lighting). Fasten the material for reliability.
- If you want to photograph objects from different angles, then you need to cover the entire inside of the container with a white cloth, gluing it to the walls with universal glue. But it is desirable to fix the material around the edges so that traces of the adhesive on the transparent parts are not noticeable and do not spoil the photo.
- Lay the finished container on its side so that it lies along, that is, on the wide side. Fix two bulbs with clips on the sides of the structure, and one on top. For a shot from one angle, in principle, one top light source is enough.
- Turn on the appliances and start shooting!
Such a lightcube is also done quite simply. It will take this:
- cardboard box,
- plain white paper, tracing paper or white cloth,
- stapler (can be a construction or ordinary clerical, but large),
- stationery knife, scissors,
- pencil and ruler.
- Cut flaps near the box so that they do not interfere.
- Now you need to cut the walls, stepping around the edges one or two centimeters. To make the slices even and neat, measure the desired distance with a ruler and draw lines with a pencil. Direct the clerical knife or sharp scissors along the created contours.
- From the inside, tighten the box with paper or cloth, fixing it on the remaining edges with a stapler. But the brackets should be on the outside so that they do not fall into the frame when shooting. Instead, you can use buttons or even high-quality universal glue.
- It remains to place lighting devices on the sides and top and start shooting. The lamps can be placed on other small boxes located on both sides of the fixture. That may be enough. For bright and clear pictures, place one source on top, fixing it on the box itself (but it should be strong enough for such a load).
Tips for beginners and professional photographers
Finally, a few practical recommendations that will make the pictures even more vivid, high-quality and original:
- Use only matte materials without embossed patterns for lining the lightcube. Gloss will reflect the rays of light, not letting them in from the outside or creating glare when it hits the surface. A complex texture will distort the lighting.
- Try to experiment and use not white fabric, but materials of other shades.
- You can shoot objects not from the front, but from above, by putting the lightbox with the open window up and sitting with the camera above it.
- Decide on the size of the device in advance so that it fits any objects that you prefer to photograph.
- It is better not to use a flash when shooting, there should be enough light anyway.
You can take bright and clear pictures at home with your own hands. But for this you will need a special device - a lightcube. And now you can make it yourself.

It’s hard to get full contrast in the photo reflexes without introducing additional nameplates (reflectors and light absorbers).
If the subject is white, its edges (edges) may disappear or blur during photography. Especially if the light tent is small and the subject is large. To eliminate this defect, you have to accurately align the light.
